We know you love food. If you also love fiction, then we’ve got a treat for you this week: a quick list of three foodie novels to add to your to-read pile, all personally selected by the story-obsessed InFlavour team.

Sandwich by Catherine Newman

Hot off the press, this one was published in June 2024 – and became an immediate New York Times bestseller.

It’s not exactly about food. But it uses the sandwich to describe a human emotional experience: the main character, Rocky, is in between her adult children and her ageing parents, and wishing this particular sandwich would last a lifetime.

Rocky and her family go on their annual holiday by the beach, for a precious week together – where secrets inevitably find their way to the surface.

Definitely one to enjoy while you’re on holiday.

Butter by Asako Yuzuki

Published in February 2024, this cult Japanese bestselling novel is about a female gourmet cook-turned-serial-killer and the journalist who’s determined to catch her.

Trust us when we say that if you start reading this book, you won’t want to put it down.

Manako Kajii is a gourmet cook – but instead of a kitchen, she’s sitting in Tokyo Detention Centre after being convicted of a number of murders. She’s refusing to speak to the press, until a journalist named Rika Machida contacts her to ask for a recipe for beef stew.

Gradually, they begin to learn from each other; with mouthwatering food descriptions every step of the way.

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

This one isn’t quite so new – published in 2022.

A chemist named Elizabeth Zott is well aware of how unpredictable life can be; but she never expected to become the star of America’s beloved cooking show, Supper at Six.

With a bizarre, chemistry-inspired approach to cooking, she’s a reluctant TV hit – but as she urges viewers to change the way they cook, she’s also challenging the status quo of how they live.

It’s funny, observant, and very readable.
